Escape the cold UK winter and top up your tan whilst enjoying the ultimate festival of football! The 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ takes place in November and December, the best time of year to visit Qatar when average temperatures are usually in the mid-20s Celsius, perfect t-shirt and beach weather.
With 560km of coastline, Qatar has many stunning beaches. In Doha they are mainly accessed via hotels. However, for those wanting to explore further afield, there are numerous unspoiled soft sandy public beaches along the Arabian gulf with fabulous clear and warm waters.
Private Hotel Beaches
Bask in the sun at these top hotel beaches. Hotels in Qatar sell day passes enabling non-hotel guests the opportunity to enjoy the hotel’s facilities. Below are a few of our favourites:
InterContinental Doha, The Bay Club
This fabulous 5-star hotel centrally located in Doha, has a stunning white sand beach – one of the largest in Doha as well as watersports and use of facilities, including access to beach bar/restaurants, 24-hour state-of-the-art gymnasium, private beach area, freeform outdoor swimming pool, steam room, squash & tennis courts, free wi-fi access, and a children’s pool & playground.
Located approximately 1hr30mins drive from central Doha, it is certainly worth the journey. This iconic coastline destination has golden sands, blue skies and clear waters. This private beach covers 3.5km, one of the largest in Qatar, where you can relax on your lounger or enjoy a range of beach activities such as volleyball, football and water sports. If you would rather relax, chill out in your private cabana at the South Bay Pool with a snack and drink. For a full day out, why not visit one of the largest adventure waterparks in the Middle East, Desert Falls, located next to the hotel, see our ‘What to do in Qatar’ blog for more details.
An oasis in the city, the iconic Sheraton Grand hotel is located on the Corniche overlooking the sea. Boasting a private beach and stunning outdoor pool area, enjoy relaxing near the pool with complimentary water and towels to keep you comfortable in the winter sun.
A golden beach and palace-inspired setting with views of the city, this resort’s stretch of pristine coastline includes a private beach and three outdoor pools. Perfect for all the family, whether you want to occupy the kids at shallow pool adjacent to the main pool or use the swim up bar for thirsty grown-ups. There’s also a poolside eatery Sharq Bites, for light lunches and snacks.
Located on Banana Island, just a 20-minute luxury high-speed catamaran ride from Doha, this resort will make you feel like you’re in the Maldives. Enjoy the stunning crescent of golden beach and swimming pools including surf pool, dive centre, watersports, bowling alley and putting green. Unwind in the Middle East’s only wellness centre in an island resort setting, spread across lush botanical gardens. Not to mention arguably one of the best locations to watch the sun set on the city.
Public Beaches
The majority of Qatar’s public beaches are located outside of Doha where there are many beautiful, unspoiled white beaches.
Katara Beach
A great option for those who don’t want to venture too far. Currently the only public beach within Doha City, it is one of the most beautiful natural beaches of Qatar and spans over 1.5km. Beach goers have a choice between enjoying a relaxed beach experience or a great variety of adrenaline-boosting beach activities – including parasailing, water-skiing, wakeboarding, pedal boats, kayaks, etc. It is however worth noting, there is a strict beach dress code requiring elbows and knees to be covered.
West Bay North Beach
More beaches are currently being constructed for visitors to enjoy during the World Cup. The West Bay North Beach development in central Doha when finished will include 12 private beaches for hotels and one public beach. Phase 1 is underway and scheduled to be completed in time for the tournament.
Al Wakrah Beach
Al Wakrah is on Doha’s metro system or alternatively a taxi ride from the city centre. The beach has excellent facilities such as gazebos and umbrellas; children’s playgrounds, while a volleyball court, a soccer pitch, and restrooms make the journey from Doha worthwhile. Behind the beach there is a promenade lined with restaurants and cafés. Choose from traditional Arabic cuisine, Indian, Italian, American or more.
Khor Al Adaid
Khor Al Adaid, also known as the Inland Sea, is an absolute must-visit, thanks to its jaw-dropping views and unique landscape as one of the few places in the world where the sea meets the desert dunes. Approximately 1hr45mins from Doha, it is hugely popular with locals and visitors. Enhance your trip and pre-book a Qatar desert tour. Activities include thrilling Dune Bashing, Quad biking, and camel rides.
Sealine Public Beach
One of the most popular beaches in Qatar approximately 40mins from Doha city centre, Sealine Beach is ideal for families and groups of friends as it offers a wide variety of activities apart from swimming – like camel riding, safari tours and dune bashing. Moreover, it is a fantastic spot to watch the sunset!
Fuwairit Beach Doha
This is one of the most visited public beaches in Qatar, and popular among families for its powdery white sand and shallow, crystal clear blue waters – just add a few coconut palms and you could be in the Caribbean! Approximately 1.5 hours drive from Doha, Fuwairit Beach is stunning. It is key to note, however, there are no public restrooms or eating facilities here.
